American Idol S05E38 - Top 3

3! 3! 3!

3 left, 3 songs each, 3 judges, 3 judges picks, 3 clive davis picks, 3 contestants picks, 3...

ryan assures us that this is where it gets serious, and that THIS, is, still, aMMMerican idol. and we are reminded that clive davis probably knows what he's talking about. he's in da house, but NOT going to guest judge. huh?

round 1 - clive's pick

1) elliot - "open arms" by journey. i think clive davis used to play bass for journey. OH, WAIT! it was randy! right! we see elliot having a sit down with clive. and elliot feels blessed. remember when clay sang it, was great, but still didn't move through? i see a repeat! he did a pretty good job. randy reminds us he was in journey. really? he thinks he worked it out. like beyonce? paula rambles. simon liked the song choice, but thought it was stiff, and not a great performance.

2) katharine - "i believe i can fly" by r. kelly. again, we see her meeting clive. the arrangement sucked. and the smiling and playing with the camera's got to stop! remember the constance? yeah! stop it! she looks great. but she sounds average. shrieky and screchy at the high parts. and the whole song's high. i dunno. randy doesn't believe she's r. kelly. well, duh. it wasn't the right thing for him. paula rambles. and she's coming out. i think. LOL! randy says song choice, and kat says she didn't pick it! LOL! simon thinks randy's unfair. he thinks that other than a couple of bum notes at the end, she created a bit of a moment for herself, there. huh?

3) taylor - "dancing in the dark" by bruce springsteen. with that song choice, you think clive's trying to tell taylor something? we, AGAIN, see him meeting clive. and clive asked bruce, PERSONALLY, to allow the song to be sung. awesome! best fit so far, song to singer. and he dances with paula! lol! and then he runs away from her! lol! he had an odd "dancings" or something at the end. but overall, best yet. not awesome, but best yet. randy loves that he danced with paula and had fun. paula rambles. simon thought it was ok, but paled in comparison with the original.

LOL! simon says that, for her age, paula's dancing was fantastic. LOL!

round 2 - judges' pick

1) elliot - "what you won't do for love" by bobby caldwell. this one's paula's choice, and the mayor of richmond, va announces the pick. and paula rambles about why she picked it. the funky white boy that has soul and rythm. huh? i knew it sounded familiar! matt rogers did it once upon a time! very nice. high five! other borat comments! randy thought he was sharp most of the song, and that it wasn't his best. paula rambles. simon thought he sang that pretty good.

2) katharine - "somewhere over the rainbow" by judy garland. this one's simon's choice. the mayor of la announces the pick. simon thinks it's perfect for her. she starts a capella. sitting. looking up. and she's then joined by a piano. and she doesn't smile. AWESOME! her best performance, by a MILE! just superb! simon's right! amazing! the arrangement was FANTASTIC too! randy, after a while, says it's the best vocal of the season from her, and that it was brilliant and hot. paula rambles. kat looks ecstatic. simon's happy for her. he thinks it the nest performance of the season. NO, but it was up there.

3) taylor - "you are so beatiful" by joe cocker. this one's randy's choice. the governor of alabama announces the pick, after being inducted to the dawgpound. lol. randy gets the joe cocker vibe from taylor, and hence the pick. he looked so hesitant, but it was really, REALLY good for the performance of the song. like a shy teen admitting his love to a girl. again, his falsetto is very pleasant to hear. a fantastic performance. one of his best, and just behind kat's rainbow tonight. randy loved the great tender moment. paula rambles. simon thinks it's his best performance, by a mile. and he's happy! and clapping! and smiles! lol!

kat and taylor just blew elliot out of the water in this round... and he's supposed to be the best male vocalist they've ever had!

round 3 - contestants' pick

COCA COLA! we hear elliot's choice. a donny hathaway version of a ray charles song.

1) elliot - "i believe to my soul" by donny hathaway. liked the change up ("when you know my name is elliot", lol!), and it was a VERY good performance. a REALLY good one. paula's screaming. zac efron's in da house. randy didn't love the song choice, but he can definitrly sing and did a good job. paula rambles. and she calls him a funky white boy. simon thinks the songs won't carry him over. but, he's a great man, singer and will make his mom proud no matter what. and we learn elliot's good looks are from his mum. yeah, i know.

COCA COLA! mcphever! she didn't want to be compared to anyone, so she chose an onld song.

2) katharine - "i ain't got nothin' but the blues" by ella fitzgerald. the intro of it was VERY cabaret, as was the whole song, but that's the era and style, i guess. again, when she powers the high notes, it gets shrieky. but despite that, it was still pretty good. randy thought it was ok. he diesn't know. paula rambles. and she refused to comment on this song. lol. simon thought she took a step back. he too, wished the middle round should have been the last round, cause that was all of their best.

COCA COLA! taylor's doing the song for the soul patrol.

3) taylor - "try a little tenderness" by otis redding. again, not as good as his second performance, but it was REALLY good! like, REALLY, really good! i liked it! randy's got a new name for him. if he could be heard. "have-a-good-time-funky taylor". huh? paula rambles, but she does say she waited the entire season to hear him sing it. simon hated the ending, but thought the song choice and the performance were great, and he'll see him at the finale.
