American Idol S04E38 - Top 3

3... (anthony's out, finally!)

clive davis joins the judging panel for this episode.

tonight, each contestant sings three times, one sing chosen by him/her, one chosen by the judges, and one chosen by clive davis.

round 1 - clive's choice

1) vonzell - "i'll never love this way again" by dionne warwick. that's the second time he chose a song that was already performed by someone else that season. very good. it was just good. clive just gave the best piece of advice given throughout the season. don't smile on a sad song. how come none of the "other" judges ever come up with good advice? the regular judges thought there were some bum notes/heard pitchiness.

2) bo - "don't let the sun go down on me" by john lennon. he's walking with the mic stand, but you saw that one coming, didn't you? and the sun glasses don't really work. overall, it was great. really, really good. we've seen better from him, and clay sang this better, but it still was great. he's now forever in the dawgpound, and he's on his way. where?

3) carrie - "crying" by roy orbison. BRILLIANT song choice. she's still great vocally, and her performance skills really do seem to improve. i thought it was great. really great. clive would have wanted to hear some falsetto, a la roy orbison's version. randy thought it was hot. i agree. carrie IS hot. the performance was hot, too. and simon's right, less would have been more, this time around, but i think she was better than bo.

1. carrie
2. bo
3. vonzell

round 2 - idol's choice

1) vonzell - "chain of fools" by aretha franklin. the song she auditioned with. she still smiled too much. other than that, one of her best performances. unlike carrie, her personality always shines through. it was really good. REALLY good. clive right, though. it was still great. simon and paula think it's one of the best performances on idol, ever. i beg to differ. it was great, but you don't need to exaggerate. simon's right, as usual.

2) bo - "in a dream" by badlands. O. M. G. a capella? A CAPELLA? A CAFUCKINGPELLA?!?!?!? his cojones are THIS BIG!!!! i'm speechless. just about every tiny thing about it was awesome, terrific, brilliant, excellent, one of the best performances EVER. the silence in the studio was deafening (how do you write it?). adn then the cheers were even more so. O. M. G. clive predicts they'll make an album together. that might mean he's gonna win, but then again clive exec-produced both clay AND ruben's debut albums, so... lol at simon's comment.

3) carrie - "making love out of nothing at all" by air supply. not the type of song i thought she'd pick for herself, but that's a good thing, as she's showing she's not ALL about the country. she looks a bit dissappointed, having to go after bo and all. and then she goes and gives one of her best performances ever. ever so slightly worse than bo, but the fact that those two performance can even be compared is amazing. her performance skills have definitely improved throughout the competition. clive dropped a name there. she can sing, according to randy, and she can blow. is that a compliment? lol! cute! "i wouldn't have wanted to follow bo" "NNNNNOOOOOOOO!!!" lol! cute!

1. bo
2. carrie
3. vonzell

round 3 - judges' choice

1) vonzell - "on the radio" by donna summer. the mayor called simon "co-well". wierd. the sparkly shirt was distracting. the change up was odd, and not right in some way. the faster part fit her better. the echo in the end was bad. but the performance was very strong, it fit her, allowed her to smile, and she was all together great. the music started before simon talked, and then he turned into clive's paula, ditto-ing him.

2) bo - "(i can't get no) satisfaction". seriously? I LOVE THIS SONG! he's running with the mic stand. the song didn't really work for a solo singer. it tends to get repetitive. don't get me wrong, it's one of the best BAND songs, but it's hard when you have to cut it down to 90 seconds, cause what you'll get is just "i can't get no satisfaction" again, and again, and again. he still "did his thang", and it was very good, but count me dissappointed, just in the slightest. clive thought he was great all night long, randy's hallucinating, and thinks he's in a bo concert, paula tells everyone to listen up, and says that after next week it's gonna cost 'em. right, like they didn't pay for those tickets. she's stupid. i hate her. simon's sorta right.

3) carrie - "man! i feel like a woman" by shania twain. aaaaaaaaaaaaand... she's forced back into country. lol at her mayor. it might be easier for her, this genre, but when she works hard to nail songs, like she did for the first two, it turns out fantastic. it was still REALLY good. not great, but REALLY good. clive astutely notes that country-pop's her thing. wow, thanks for letting us know. randy talks as usual, he's glad she had fun, and then, mid-sentence, screams "CARRIE!". paula assumes bo's safe, and says one of the girls will go home. simon thinks that was enough to get her into the finale. i concur. she did seem to have fun on that song.

1&2. carrie & bo
3. vonzell

overall ranking: (it's really hard this season, as all three did a great job, but it seems like the finale everyone expected, bo v carrie, will actually happen)

1. bo
2. carrie
3. vonzell
