American Idol S03E33 - Top 5

5...

the theme that brought us "minnie the moocher" and, of course, "stuff like that there" back in season 1, is back! as tonight's theme is big band.

1) diana - "someone to watch over me" by ella fitzgerald. she didn't sing "to watch", but "who watch"... she looks so much older than she really is. just not that good. nothing bad about it, but absolutly nothing good either.

then she speaks to the audience, explaining her song choice, and introduces her second song. huh?

"get happy" by judy garland. i realised why she's not that good tonight. first off, she's not THAT good, when compared to the big guns of seasons past, and the divas of season present. other than that, though, she didn't play the role of a big band singer, like most of the season 1 contestants did when this theme came along, but rather she performed in her usual way, and just happened to be backed by a big band.

2) george - "cheek to cheek" by fred astaire. this is what i meant. LOVE the song choice. didn't sound all that great, but better than diana. just better.

he too explains his song choices.

"what a wonderful world" by louis armstrong. LOVE the song choice. the falsetto towards the end was plain bad. otherwise good, not great. again there's just something not quite right. something missing. best yet, but not by much. what happened to paula's mic? that was painful.

3) latoya - "too close for comfort" by natalie cole. this episode is beginning to suck... not a single "big band" song choice, like all but rj had in the first season. it was ok, but not for my taste. she forgot natalie cole's name.

"don't rain on my parade" by barbara streisand. the start was irritating. that's more like it! actually really good. best yet, by far. for once, randy and paula's standing o's were justified. paula's still delusional. not once, but twice!

4) jasmine - "the way you look tonight" by tony bennett. she sits. still no actual "big band" performance. worst yet. and it's not that close... just nothing redeeming about it.

"almost like being in love" by nat king cole. just bad. her voice did NOT sound good tonight. worst yet, and would probably stay that way.

ryan doesn't understand what randy's looking for, and then paula suggests that randy and simon go up on stage and sing. they get up. then simon sits down. randy too. the thing the "big band" plays before going on a break is always the same...

5) fantasia - "crazy little thing called love" by queen. how on earth can this song be considered "big band"? the phrasin was just terrible. the song choice is the worst yet. it might have had the potential to be good. but no. just... no.

"thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!" lol. she too, like everyone else, explain her song choices.

"what are you doing the rest of your life?" by barbara streisand. another not-really-big-band performance! yay! pretty good. not REALLY related to the theme, and not that close to latoya, but still pretty good. again with the "yeah yeah yeah yeah " ending. "fantazia". lol.

no seperate rankings for each round, mainly because there weren't really two seperate rounds, rather each contestants performed twice.

1. latoya
2. fantasia
3. george
4. diana
5. jasmine
